| Day Three - Tuesday May, 4th - Rocket Construction and Shuttle Mission Training | |||||||
|
Chaperones were not permitted in Mission Control during training or missions to make the experience as real as possible for the students. Construction began on model rockets that will be tested later in the week at a location called "Area 51". All Space Academy trainees practiced for a session that will put their skills and teamwork to the test in a two hour space shuttle mission, also to be held later in the week. Mission Control Center members will monitor all situations and command this mission from the ground. With intense training in computer and communications systems, they will be responsible for the ultimate safety of the mission. The Space Shuttle crew consists of pilots and commanders and mission specialists. Mission Specialists learned about space suits and walking in space on an EVA (Extra Vehilicular Activity). Space station crew members trained on all operations of the Space Station; life support, crew and equipment support systems and scientific experiments.

Day Four- Wednesday May, 5th - Shuttle Mission Training
|
Wednesday, like every other day in the schedule, begins with "wake-up" at 7:00am, a walk through Shuttle Park to the cafeteria and breakfast between 7:30 and 8:30am. Breakfast consists of a variety of cereals, milk, scrambled eggs, sausage and biscuit, bananas, apples, orange juice, waffles, French toast and pancakes. Lunch and dinner are a similar variety of "kid-friendly" main courses and desserts and always includes a salad bar and fruit. The Man-Maneuvering Unit simulates the MMU used for work outside the Shuttle in the weightlessness of space. This simulator moves frictionless on cushions of air.

| Day Five - Thursday May, 6th - Rocket Testing | |||||||
| Model rockets that were built earlier in the week were put to the test today at the Launch Area. Counselors and Rocket technicians were on hand to help set up the rockets and ensure safety. Students stood behind a protective barrier from where they could watch the launches. Successful rockets, after spending all of their fuel and reaching their maximum height, would release a parachute from the nose cone, which would allow the rocket to float slowly back to Earth. After each launch session, students would fan out across the launch area collecting the rocket "debris". | |||||||
